Our Angel
Carol A. Baumhauer is the angel in Angel Housing Solutions. In her lifetime, she was a presence and a force for good in her community. There was a quiet strength about her. People gravitated to her and sought her counsel, sharing their lives and experiences and connecting with her about a multitude of things.
Carol was born Carol Ann Lenzi on August 3, 1945 in Butler, Pennsylvania. She was an avid volleyball and tennis player who lamented that Title IX came too late for her generation. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in business education and certifications in all offered areas, including typing, shorthand, accounting, office practice, and clerical practice. She was a member and officer of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
After graduation, Carol taught at Central Bucks High School West for 23 years. She served as chairperson of the Business Department, strengthening and expanding the accounting program and coaching swimming and lacrosse. At one point, when the school was short staffed, she taught both office practice and clerical practice together in the same room. When presented with a student who only had one hand, she taught herself to teach that student to type one-handed while she conducted class for all other students.

Carol is well remembered by her students. College students returning to see her after taking Accounting 101 thanked her for the high-quality foundation she provided that helped them get through the class. Many students left high school and went right to work. Carol helped connect her students to job opportunities as secretaries and billing clerks, often advocating to get her students better wages and counseling her students through the application and interview processes. When offered the opportunity to take a position in school administration, Carol opted to remain in her department where she could continue direct interaction with the young people she taught.
Carol married Joe Baumhauer in 1971. When Joe and Carol started a business kitchen remodeling in 1979, Carol did all of the accounting and marketing for the business in addition to her teaching. She left teaching in 1988 and became more involved with the business, educating customers and assisting with design work.
Carol was passionate about women’s rights. She committed countless hours and resources to equality. Instead of complaining about discrimination, she worked tirelessly to change things. Carol served as the president of the Democratic Woman’s Forum, a group that mentors and guides women who want to serve in government. Under her tenure, a “campaign school” was created to educate women who wanted to run for public office. She also ran fundraising events in support of political campaigns.
In addition to her roles as a teacher, a wife and business partner, and an advocate for women’s rights, Carol is remembered for her extraordinary commitment to service. In the middle 1970s, Carol joined the Central Bucks County chapter of Soroptimist International, the largest federated women’s club in the world. She served the organization and her community for nearly 30 years. She ran successful fundraising activities that raised money for scholarships to assist women returning to school and for community service projects. She was President when the group refurbished the rooms at Valley Youth House in Warminster. Carol served as Nockamixon Township Auditor for six years (1989 – 1995) and treasurer of the 143rd Legislative District and Nockamixon Democratic Committees.
Carol passed away December 8, 2012 after a six-year battle with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). She is missed every day by Joe and many friends. We know that Carol is smiling on the work of Angel Housing Solutions today.
